Shroomroot is built to be educational and engaging. You play as a Douglas-fir seedling and the game’s focus is to grow out the underground root system.
You grow your root actively through the soil, collecting nitrogen, phosphorus, and water. You try to maintain your resource levels despite the fact that they run out over time. Your goal is to have enough of all nutrients by the end of each level to at least survive to the next level. If you do a better job of collecting all nutrients, your seedling will grow, do an even better job and you make fircones.
Rewards can be collected throughout the game and when unlocked they include informative pictures and text about plant nutrition, the mycorrhizal symbiosis, and mycorrhizal networks. “Mycorrhizae” refers to the symbiotic association of plants and fungi in which plants give fungi carbon in the form of sugar and fungi help plants access nutrients like water, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the soil.
Shroomroot was designed by Julia Amerongen Maddison and developed by Christopher Adderley and Alex Catamo.
